Puppy Power!

Meet the newest member of the family- an eight week old chocolate lab puppy named "Doc". My brother, Bart, wanted a new hunting dog for his upcoming 40th birthday and fell head over heels the second he laid eyes on this little guy. Isn't he just adorbs? I can't wait to meet him! Nothing cuter than a chubby puppy belly and warm puppy breath.

Are You Kidding Me?!?!

Guess what I found in my mailbox this afternoon when I got home from work? The August issue of Brides magazine. *rolling eyes*

Cue the ¿QuĂ©? kitty.

Joyeux Anniversaire!

My lovely mother celebrated her 65th birthday on September 11th. I meant to post something about it on the actual date, but we were busy her entire birthday weekend because of our hometown's annual Marigold Festival. We attended the parade Saturday morning (my goddaughter Elizabeth performed with the junior high marching band) and spent most of the afternoon browsing the arts&crafts booths at Art In The Park. My brother and nephews came up later that night and stayed with us until Sunday afternoon. We all went out for lunch at Steak N Shake, and then came back home to enjoy some of Mom's Chicago Bears birthday cake. By the way, thank you Bears for giving my mom a win on her special day!

My kid sister, Sara, turns 31 today. 31. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that. I can still remember how excited I was to get the phone call from my dad the morning she was born. Now she's a 5th grade teacher and the mother of two little girls. Time sure does fly.

Much love to two of my favorite Virgo ladies!

Ahoy, Mateys!

Pippin Took modeling his new skull and crossbones collar. ARRR!

Why did I buy my cat a pirate themed collar? Well, my mom and I are constantly referring to Pippin as "Captain Morgan" because he doesn't use his litter box like a normal cat. When he has to have a BM, he stands completely upright and places the paw of his left leg on the edge of the tub, resembling this:
I need to get a picture of him while he's doing it because it's hilarious!

Things That Make Me Say, "What The Hell?!?"

This magazine was in my mailbox this morning. A fact that I find very odd for the following reasons:

1. I have never had a subscription to Brides magazine (nor will I ever).
2. I am not working in any bridal related business.
3. I'm not planning a wedding any time soon.
4. Hell, I don't even have a boyfriend.

I was convinced the postal worker put it in my mailbox by mistake, but no- it had my name and address on the label.

Very funny, Universe. You could have at least given me a magazine that I'll actually have a chance to use.

The 2,996 Project: Vincent Abate

Five years ago, on the fifth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I participated in the 2,996 Project, a writing assignment for bloggers all around the world to honor the victims of that terrible day. Cantor Fitzgerald bond trader Vincent Abate was assigned to me, so it is in his memory that I re-publish this post. Please say a prayer for him and for the other souls who were lost September 11, 2001.

Vincent Abate, 40 ...bond trader, Cantor Fitzgerald
"To be acquainted with Vinny for five minutes, even then, was to know him. He was, in many ways, larger than life. His personality radiated from within a room. His friends describe him as a man's man...a lover of women, of his career, of life."

In Latin, the name "Vincent" means conqueror. Alfred and Elaine Abate couldn't have selected a more appropriate name for their eldest son when he entered the world on May 23, 1961. Throughout his life, Vincent Abate conquered the hearts of everyone he happened to meet. The Brooklyn, New York native was described as "happy, enthusiastic, honest, and affectionate" by his family and his many friends, one of whom remembered that he was "the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back to make sure you weren't cold."

A lifelong bachelor, Vincent resided in a brownstone in his beloved Brooklyn. Neighbors would often see him zooming down the streets in his black corvette with the top down and Elvis tunes blaring from the radio. It wasn't unusual for him to travel to Las Vegas on weekends, where he could often be found shooting craps at Caeasar's Palace. Vinny also enjoyed horse racing. A regular at the Meadowlands, he grew particularly fond of a filly named Worldly Beauty. A couple of weeks before his death, Vinny traveled to Canada with friends and was in the audience when Worldly Beauty captured the She's A Great Lady Stake in 1:53.

Vincent had always enjoyed a close relationship with his brother Andrew, who was 3 years his junior. The two boys were inseparable during childhood, first attending St. Francis Cabrini Grammar School and then Poly Prep Country Day School, where they played baseball and football. Although they attended different colleges ( Vinny graduated from Ithaca College in '84 while Andrew graduated from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in 1987 ), the brothers eventually found themselves working side by side at Cantor Fitzgerald as bond traders. In the evenings, after long days, the brothers unwound by shooting hoops or batting handballs together. On summer weekends, Andrew and his wife, Carolyn, often drove to Vincent's rented house on the Jersey Shore for Vincent's barbecue or Andrew's grilled teriyaki.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, when the first plane hit the North tower of the World Trade Center, Vincent and Andrew were working in their offices. They were among the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees who perished in the attack.

To the Abate family...your beloved Vincent and Andrew will NEVER be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

O Captain, My Captain

Backes Named 20th St.Louis Blues Captain

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong along with Head Coach Davis Payne announced Friday the club has named David Backes the 20th captain in franchise history.

In addition, the club named Barret Jackman, Jamie Langenbrunner, Andy McDonald and Alex Steen assistant captains.

Backes, 27, joins a Blues captaincy club that includes several National Hockey League (NHL) Hall of Fame inductees such as Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Bernie Federko, Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens.

When I checked the website this morning at 10 and saw that David had been chosen for this esteemed leadership position, I let out a "Woo hoo!", did a happy dance, and then raced down the hall to share the news with my best friend Kelly (who loves Backes so much she owns a personalized #42 jersey). The student teacher in my class probably thinks I'm a weirdo, but I don't care :)

Sonic, You're Killing Me

Back in February, you cruelly tempted me with the Red Velvet Cheesecake Blast, but now you've crossed the line by unleashing this delectable, tantalizing beverage of pumpkin-y goodness:

You know how much I LOVE pumpkin. Admit it, you want me to stay fat, don't you?

Hey Look! It's Congress!

The only difference? No progress will ever be made around the North-going Zax (Democrats) and South-going Zax (Republicans) while they refuse to work together for the common good of the people.

Wondering

Why do some people think it's funny to make mean-spirited remarks at others' expense and then try to pass it off as a joke?

I was at a co-worker's "game night" last night, laughing and having a great time, when I heard the roommate of said co-worker make some catty remark about me while we were playing Taboo. This person doesn't know me all that well, so I don't know why she just assumed it was okay to take a personal jab at me. It's not that I don't have a sense of humor, or that I don't know how to take a joke, but what she said about me wasn't at all funny (or true in the least bit). Even my best friend, who is the queen of sarcasm, thought she crossed the line. That's saying a lot.

I can joke around with the best of them, but my humor is never mean-spirited or insulting. Life's too short to spend my time around people who have to be mean to make themselves feel better about their own miserable lives.
